April Dawn Parker uses symbols in her paintings from three different levels of magnification: 1) flattened graphics influenced by cartography, 2) the hexagon inspired by honeybees, and 3) a pod shape representative of intracellular structures. By juxtaposing these views, Parker teases out the conflicting forces of encapsulated worlds, such as in a city, a bee colony, or within a single organism and invites the viewer to move through all three at once. Parker's formal technique embodies this tension of visual mash-ups, where she pairs warm colors with cool, places large against small and drippy strokes next to tight.

Parker has a BA from Brown University and studied at Yale University School of Art in the MFA Graphic Design program.
