The Artist Hines is a full time artist originally from New York City now living and painting in Sausalito, California. A figurative painter and surrealist for most of his life, in 2001 Hines’ work began to shift towards abstractionism as a means of fulfilling his need for ever greater artistic expression.

Hines’ abstract paintings were heavily influenced by the New York school of Abstract  Expressionists. It was through artists like Franz  Kline and Robert Motherwell that he first began to understand the language of abstraction. In time his abstracts began to gravitate more towards the color  field painters with their minimalist approach to color and composition.

Though  he very much admired the works of Barnett Newman, Clifford Still and Mark Rothko, Hines wanted his paintings to have their color field minimalism yet go creatively further in terms of texture, color and contrast.

“I  love experiencing the beautiful combination of freedom and risk involved in  producing an abstract painting where attention is focused upon expression and  exploring the materials rather than manipulating them to render objects in a  painting. I approach my painting as a purely emotional physical experience."

“The greatest inspiration for my abstract work is simply  my love of the materials. I love paint and the experience of seeing what paint  can do, what happens when you put one color next to another or apply paint  thinly or thickly. My intent is not to control the painting experience but to be open to it, to allow myself, the brush, and the paints to dance  together.”

Hines is Board President of The Artists Guild of San Francisco, a non-profit organization providing local artists with outdoor show sites in San Francisco's city parks. His work is in collections throughout the United States.
