RHODA GROSSMAN Rhoda’s work combines digital and traditional materials. Bold, colorful portraits and gestural figure drawings line both her studio walls and her hard drive. Rhoda is an accomplished digital painter and author of several books on the creative use of pixel-based drawing and painting software. Also known as the “pixel-packin’ mama,” she has taught computer graphics techniques at several schools in the bay area and authored numerous tutorials on CD for both Adobe Photoshop and Corel Painter users. Her domain (literally!) is digitalpainting.com. Your visit to Rhoda’s ICB studio is likely to include a demonstration of digital painting, including hands-on practice. She encourages artists at any stage or any age to try this new medium for self-expression. One-on-one training is available. The experience of over 20 years as an illustrator and caricaturist influences Rhoda’s current studio work. A headshot photo might be manipulated with Photoshop filters to alter colors and simplify shapes. The result is projected onto canvas or archival paper and painted in stages with acrylic, oils or mixed media. Rhoda’s approach to figure drawing is distinctive. She brings a portable computer and pressure-sensitive graphics tablet to a session with the model. Dozens of quick poses are captured with Corel Painter. The best of these might be printed on canvas or other surfaces for possible enhancement “by hand.” Or, once again, the projector is used to inspire another version of the pose “from scratch.” Three of the images in this slide show were created digitally and three are in “traditional” media.
