ARTIST STATEMENT

Alexandra Friedman brings the ancient art of tapestry weaving into the present day.  Her contemporary images reflect a luminous world where the interplay of light and shadow make unusual patterns across the surface of the tapestry.  Using architecture as a foil, the viewer is drawn into the familiar venues of these often full-scale images.  More recently she is exploring the constructional aspects of the medium and reworking some of the more traditional textile language in her own voice.

Alexandra Friedman has had a life long enthusiasm with drawing and photography.  It wasn't until an opportunity to weave in 1972 drew her attention into the possibilities in the medium of woven textiles.  Starting with an apprenticeship in New York City with Michelle Lester, the first project she wove was an edition of shaped tapestries to fit the bulkhead of jumbo jets.

She has since evolved a very personal style that that includes both realistic and abstracted imagery. She has exhibited widely and won many awards including a prestigious fellowship award from the New England Foundation for the Arts.

Her tapestries have been collected and commissioned by both corporations and private individuals both here and abroad.
