DANA DRAPER Sausalito artist, awarded 1st prize for artistic merit at the 2003 Sausalito Art Festival. The acrylic painting format is, 16 inches by 7 feet, narrow and long to enhance a feeling of time and the progression of narrative, expressing dance, music, yoga and relationship. In speaking about his own work, Dana says.... “ My paintings are achieved with the creative assistance of professional models . We collaborate on my narrative and motion concepts based on past and present myths. The figures interact with space and time creating the many stories that start and stop along the pictorial journey. .” Dana Draper, who shares a studio in Sausalito with his wife, the painter, Ingrid Butler, has been painting the figure for 40 years. He was born and raised in San Francisco, studied at the Art Students League in N.Y. and received an M.A. in Art from New York University. Growing up, he was greatly influenced by his his aunt, Peggy Guggenheim and her love of collecting avant garde art. His grandmother, Dorothy Draper, the well known designer, who decorated the interiors of the S.F. Fairmont Hotel as well as interior spaces at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York city, influenced Dana Draper in color, and design. Dana Draper is currently drawing figures directly on copper using patinas to etch natural colors into the metal and then uniquely installs the finished art in site specific environments.
