STATEMENT
My intention is to see deeper than the physical qualities within a landscape. I choose locations which have a certain wildness, where the essence and story are more than the contours and lines.
I paint and draw in the open air in California, the Southwest, and Italy’s northern Tuscany. My paintings find their inspiration at the same source as the California colorists, both emotionally and historically. I use oil paint both on canvas and shaped pieces of marble. I am drawn to seacoast edges, the light on autumn vines, and soaring mountainsides. When my eyes and senses are activated by the converging landscape, I feel more alive. I become one with nature, earth, sky, and sea, and paint from that perspective.
My passion is to capture the light that illuminates our surrounding landscape with my paintbrush, to reveal vibrant color seen over an entire day as the sun shifts. The slant of light this winter creates another kind of form structure: the glare of summer vanished.
Part of the energy of a painting comes from the juxtaposition of emotion called forth by the vista contrasted with longheld traditions of American plein air work and Impressionism.
My avenue into the deeper power of painting is to sit with shapes created by the land, to return year after year to uncover new resonances. My intention is to create images which light up people’s lives and open them to extraordinary perceptions.
