Carolyn Cappai creates paste-painted paper, an early form of decorated paper dating back to the 16th Century that involves mixing pigment with a starch medium and applying it to paper.

³For me, paste-painting is like dancing on paper.  I paint with rhythm, movement, pattern, and beauty.  I begin with a sheet of 25x40 inch Arches Text Wove.  I paint both sides of the paper with many layers of the paste paint.  Each layer is worked with tools, and by extraction, unexpected colors, textures and pattern emerge.  Then the paste paper is torn to the size of the project it is going to become.

Often, during the process, a composition reveals itself. When I recognize this, I frame and hang the piece as an abstract painting.  This discovery takes the dance to an exciting level.
